June: CareLink Torrey House
Members at Main Line Unitarian Church (MLUC) believe that all people deserve to be treated with dignity, and they found that sentiment shared by the staff at CareLink Community Support Services, a company that provides a variety of assistance to people with mental illnesses. Having designated CareLink’s Torrey House as the church’s Offering Outreach recipient for the month of June, Main Line Unitarian recently presented a gift of $2,136.
CareLink’s Torrey House, located in Haverford, PA, is a personal care home that specializes in working with individuals who have schizophrenia and similar serious mental illnesses. The program, which operates in a large group home setting, provides 24-hour support and supervision to a maximum of 17 individuals from Delaware County. Areas of support range from basic hygienic care and medication management to supervision of appointments and personal shopping. Group therapy offers a chance for socialization, education, and creative expression, while emphasis is also placed on participation in activities and local community events.
Torrey House Program Administrator Chris Swallow offered some insight into how MLUC’s donation would help the program residents: "Being a non-profit organization, it can often be difficult to find appropriate funds to keep our facility looking beautiful and in good shape for our residents. The money donated from the Main Line Unitarian church will go extremely far in providing us the opportunity to purchase and/or replace items around the house. Our residents [came] up with a wish list of new patio furniture and a new grill for the side porch of our facility where many of our residents congregate. Again, we would like to thank the Main Line Unitarian Church for their most generous donation."
